Born of amaNgwevu on my mother's side — Skhobeni, in the Hanover country outside Bhisho — and amaQwathi on my father's, from Engcobo. A registered guide, based in the Makhanda area, and the person telling every story on this site.
Most heritage tours are told by someone who studied the place. This one is told by someone who belongs to it — amaNgwevu and amaQwathi aren't research subjects here, they're where I come from.
That doesn't replace a historian's rigor. The frontier wars, the political history, the cosmology — all of it still gets checked against the record. It means that where the record and what's been carried down inside a family disagree, or where something needs a context a textbook won't give it, this site says so rather than picking the tidier version.
The three lines this site tells — the frontier landscape, the magical world of the amaXhosa, the geology underneath both — are the same land, seen from where I actually stand in it.
